30-Day Song Challenge Day 28

Day 28 of the 30-day song challenge and we are almost there! Can you believe it? Has it just flown by? Please don’t answer that. Today I am tasked with choosing a track by an artist whose voice I love.

This has been the easiest task of the lot.

The 30-Day Song Challenge asks the people taking part to pick songs every day, for 30 days, based on the prompts in the list below. I also decided to write a blog post every day, explaining my choices. It’s been an excellent exercise for me to write more but at times has been a right old pain in the bum hole.

30- Day Song Challenge

Day 28

Picking the artist whose voice I love wasn’t too tricky. Of course, there are many others I could have chosen. I was going to list some of the other artists, but I quickly realised I would be writing a very long list! Besides, I’ve got a lot to do, people to meet, chocolate to eat.

The part of today’s challenge I found hard was deciding which song to use. As I am writing this, I am still undecided and currently listening to tracks.

And It’s You And It’s Me

The artist I’m picking is Guy Garvey, the lead singer for Elbow. I wasn’t sure what song to pick because they’ve done so many good ones. One Day Like This is probably their most recognisable song (Google it, you’ve heard it) but I don’t feel his shows his voice of as well as the song I’ve chosen. I’ve gone for ‘Bones Of You’ which is nothing short of a masterpiece and Guy Garvey’s voice sounds both powerful and tender. When I first heard Elbow, I found Garvey’s voice unique rather than stunning but as time has gone on, the more music they released and the more I heard him, the more I realised that his voice is a one-off.

His voice is soulful, emotional, rough yet smooth, powerful and ‘real’. He isn’t putting on some singing ‘accent’; what you hear is his northern English accent.

And We’re Sleeping Through The Day

‘Bones of You’ was released on the 2008 album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ and enjoyed success all over the world. ‘Bones Of You’ isn’t as well known as ‘One Day Like This’ or ‘Grounds For Divorce’ both of which won awards at the 2009 Ivor Novello Awards, but it showcases Garvey’s voice wonderfully. If you’ve never heard Elbow before and this song tickles something in you, then I implore you to listen to the album. It sounds somewhere between alternative rock and heaven.

I don’t have much more to add about this song and Guy Garvey’s voice, but I could write ‘brilliant’ 100 times and still not convey how much I love listening to him sing. Each track on the album would be beautiful songs with anyone singing them, but with Garvey’s voice, the songs move into another bracket of greatness.

So that is day 28 of the 30-day song challenge all wrapped up and ready to go. Just two more days ahead of us now – hang in there, we can do this!

Here is the Spotify list if you would like to hear any of the other songs in my challenge –

  1. I googled it. Nope. Never heard of Elbow. Never heard that song before. To me, an elbow is a joint in the arm that hurts like f*!& when you smack it against something. I’m going to throw out Sarah McLachlan and Brandi Carlile as two contenders for best voice. Do with that what you will.

I waited 28 days for a body part?
I Googled it. I’ve never heard it.
This has been the longest 28 days of my life….

    1. It’s not about whether you’ve heard it, it’s whether you liked it? I’m trying to introduce people to new experiences. And if you think it’s been a long 28 days for you, how about a bit of sympathy for me? It’s been hell (especially reading the comments after) 🙁

I’m sorry, I thought my not caring for it was understood.
As for the comments, they kept you sharp.
