30-Day Song Challenge Day 14
Today is day 14 of the 30-day song challenge and I have to choose a track that I would love to be played at my wedding.
Day 14 of the 30-day song challenge and before I go ay further I want to thank you for sticking with this. Something’s in life are sent to test us, to push us to the very limits of human endurance. This challenge is one such thing, for me as a writer and, I’m sure, for you as the reader. But like Scott of The Antarctic, I will keep blindly moving forward in a desperate attempt to cover myself in glory before eventually dying alone in a frozen wasteland.
In the 30-day song challenge, if you don’t already know, I have to pick one song everyday based on the list below. I came up with the genius idea (at the time) of writing a blog about each of my choice. It sounded like a fun little writing exercise at the first… What fools us men are.
As you can see, day 14 requires ‘a song that you would love to be played at your wedding’. I think this proves that this challenge is aimed at teenagers . It may also be aimed at people with too much time on their hands……………………………..
Being already taken, (sorry ladies), I am unable to pick todays track. Or so you would think. Surely someone that is already married would pick a song that he actually had played at his wedding? Well, no. I was married in a traditional Thai service so busting out songs by Abba or Love Shack by The B-52’s isn’t part of the tradition. I know, an absolute shocker!
At a traditional Thai wedding they usually don’t even have a reception. They just seal the deal, have a bit of food and everyone is home having a kip by 1pm. But with family coming over from the UK, the least we could do was put on a spread. A spread was indeed put on but the music was all Thai. I really like Thai music though, which helps. They still have that awful X-factor tripe like every country but the real artists make great music, so I was happy for that to be blaring out.
I’m Off The Deep End
Picking a song for my wedding despite having already had one and not playing it, feels a bit odd. Picking it is easy though as we both heard for the first time together and instantly loved.
If you’d told me two years ago that the song of choice for my wedding would be a duet with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, I would have told you to go and sleep it off. I would also have probably advised you to go for a full medical and to lay off the crack for a bit, but here it is. My pick is Shallow by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper from the movie ‘A Star Is Born’.
Watch As I Dive In
The song was released in September 2018 and fits rather comfortably in the ‘power ballad’ category. Despite my usual apathy to power ballads this track is a real favourite in the Dance household and that is all that matters. No one can be cool all the time, not even me. It’s not just us that think the song is good as it topped the charts in over 20 countries. It also bagged an an Oscar for best original song in 2019.
I’ve never been a huge fan of Lady Gaga but her vocals on this track are outstanding. It’s safe to say her voice in this track fits nicely into the ‘spine tingling’ category. The lyrics are unusual for a love ballad as they don’t consist of the usual ‘isn’t love great and full of tweeting birds’. The song focuses on basically drowning but not fighting it.
I guess that is one of the things I love most about this song. Love can sometimes feel like drowning, it is something you cannot control and eventually will stop fighting against. I don’t know if that sounds unromantic but having reached my 40’s, I think I was always fighting against falling in love as, in my mind, it would eventually hurt you. I’m glad I stopped fighting. I’m far from the shallow and never been happier.
Thanks for reading and if you’ve enjoyed this please subscribe and take a look around at my other choices on the challenge.
