30-Day Song Challenge

Day Three

The song that reminds me of summer is a remix by Ewan Pearson of ‘Manila’ by a Swiss record producer called Seelenluft. The track pretty much, to my knowledge, has nothing to do with summer but it reminds me of the summer I first heard it.

Manila – Ewan Pearson Remix

It was originally released in 2002 on the Seelenluft album, ‘Out Of The Woods’ and is quite different to the remix. The song is sung by a then 12-year old boy from Compton called Michael Compton but it only began to come to peoples attention a year later when an English producer, Ewan Pearson remixed it.

I didn’t hear it until roughly four years ago. It was around this time that I was spending the summer holed up in my bedroom unable to barely move and almost married to my bed due to my back pain. I spent almost 5 months laying down and as the summer passed me by I heard this song, somehow…

I don’t remember how I came to hear it but I instantly loved it. The singing which sounds slightly out of key, the electonic beats and bumps has a ‘sunny vibe’ to it. I don’t know how else to describe it. It was also around this time that I had decided to go away somewhere far from London on holiday when I was well enough. The 12-year old’s voice singing about being on a plane to Manila seemed to speak to the childlike part of me wanting to fly somewhere far away and completely completely new. Part of the lyrics are about dancing on a plane – something that made me excited to go away, it gave me something to lok forward to.

The trip I took having got my back into better shape was to Thailand…and I’m still here.

So that’s the song that reminds me of summer. you can see my first two songs here;

Day One – Pink Moon by Nick Drake (a song with a colour in the title) 30-DAY SONG CHALLENGE

Day Two – Five Man Army by Massive Attack (a song with a number in the title) 30-DAY SONG CHALLENGE

  1. Is it me, or are you plucking musicians from the black hole of obscurity? In truth, it’s probably me – I’m the least music-y person you know, in terms of popular music (I did play the piano and violin grown up). Or maybe it’s that you’re picking musicians that were bigger in the UK but never made it across the pond? In any case, I take my original question back. It’s definitely me.

    However, I’m compelled to tell you what I would have chosen for this day:
    The Boys of Summer, by Don Henley, which not only evokes images of summer for me, but also happens to be one of my favorite songs of all time.

    1. …It’s definitely you 😉 I’m sure more recognisable songs will be coming soon (in fact, you’ll probably know tomorrow’s/today’s) Boys of Summer is a good track though 👍

    Ditto that.
    Manila.. in the summertime?
    Not if it was raining margaritas!

    1. I’ll cancel that trip I’d arranged for us all to go to Manila then…I’m sure we’d all go anywhere if it was raining margaritas.

        Even with margaritas falling from the sky…. it’s too damn hot for me!
